The City of Oakwood is located in Montgomery County, Ohio and is known for having excellent schools, unique city services and an attractive and vibrant business district along Far Hills Avenue which features colorful flowers and trees. The lighting poles and fixtures, originally installed in the mid-1970’s, were beginning to look a little tired and worn.
The Oakwood Assistant City Manager said, “The poles had started to rust and when several poles were damaged in vehicular accidents and could not be replaced, we had to do something.”
Custom craft and charm
The City started researching their options and contacted their trusted street light service provider, Miami Valley Lighting, for advice. Oakwood residents like the fact their community is unique and didn’t want the standard lighting fixtures used elsewhere.
The Assistant City Manager said residents preferred the soft yellow light of sodium vapor fixtures over the white light projected by other lighting. Oakwood also wanted the poles to be decorative and interesting while still strong enough to accommodate RTA electric trolley lines.
Because Oakwood wanted to modernize the lighting system while maintaining the aesthetics of the community, Miami Valley Lighting designed an enhanced lighting technology and new infrastructure that combined beauty and durability.
Working with Oakwood and RTA, Miami Valley Lighting installed the city’s choice of decorative poles and fixtures.

Spotlight on savings and service
“We got a lot of positive feedback from residents,” the Assistant City Manager said. “People love the look of the poles and they like the light fixtures.”
Another benefit of the project was increased energy savings – approximately 20%.
With the system, Miami Valley Lighting continues to provide full-service lighting for Oakwood. If a bulb needs to be replaced or a minor repair is needed, Oakwood simply calls Miami Valley Lighting and the work is completed within three business days.
“We’ve always had excellent service,” the Assistant City Manager said.
